Plant A Tree This Arbor Day

April 22, 2013

Recycling is a big part of Wheels For Wishes and recycling is also a very big step in creating a greener world. Wheels For Wishes is a proud supporter of the green movement and encourages others to get involved, especially on holidays such as Arbor Day. Wheels For Wishes accepts donated cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs, boats, or motorcycles, and recycles or auctions them off so vehicles can be recycled and reused. Earned proceeds from recycled or auctioned vehicles benefit Make-A-Wish, so there are many ways that an unwanted car can be put to better use.

Since Wheels For Wishes is a proud supporter of the green movement, Arbor Day is another perfect time of the year to be kind to the world we live in, starting with your own backyard. Maybe you have an unwanted vehicle taking up space in your yard or in your garage, and if you do, consider donating it to Wheels For Wishes, benefiting Make-A-Wish.

When you donate a vehicle, you have nothing to lose and you will actually end up with the maximum possible tax deduction at tax time, plus the great feeling of knowing your vehicle is helping to grant a wish for a child in your community.

Start With Your Backyard

Another way you can give back to the world on Arbor Day is by planting a tree in your own yard! Planting a tree is easy and allows you to contribute to the green movement. Planting a tree is a simple act but is also so beneficial in keeping the world clean. Trees help prevent air pollution, improve soil and water quality, and can even reduce heating and cooling costs when they are placed properly. Plus, they can increase the value of a home and they help to block out noisy neighbors, highways, or school playgrounds.

Now that you know how important planting trees are, we will help you decide which types of trees you should plant in your own yard. It’s easy to plant trees, but the hardest part is deciding where to start!

Best Trees To Plant

We have put together a list of a few of the best trees to plant, whether you wish to plant it in your yard, at your work office, or maybe at your cabin or vacation home. All you will have left to do is choose which one works best for you!

  • Red Maple: The state tree of Rhode Island grows in just about any weather condition. It grows into a medium or large tree of about 40’ to 70’ feet.

  • River Birch: Great in wet zones, the tree is heat-tolerant and can survive mild droughts. The tree cannot handle shade, however. The River Birch can grow between 40’ and 70’ tall.

  • Sycamore: Rot and damage prone, the tree is still an excellent tree to plant and also one of the easiest. The tree can grow as tall as 75’ to 100’. The tree is tolerant and can grow under nearly any condition, but creek banks are the best choice.

  • Flowering Dogwood: The state tree of Virginia and Missouri can be a little more difficult to plant and maintain. If grown in the open sun, the tree is wider and less sleek. If planted under a canopy of larger trees, it would be fast-growing, sleek, and slim.

  • Red and White Oak: The state tree of Connecticut, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, and New Jersey is the most popular tree in the United States.

  • Yellow Poplar: The state tree of Indiana, Tennessee, and Kentucky is very tolerant to disease and insects and can grow as tall as 70 to 90’.

  • American Elm: The state tree of Massachusetts and North Dakota is known for dying of the Dutch elm disease (DED). However, it can grow between 60’ and 80’ tall.

  • Redbud: Oklahoma’s small state tree grows to be about 20’ to 30’ tall. It looks its best in the spring.

  • Conifers: The White Pine, Loblolly Pine, and the Ponderosa Pine are conifers. The White Pine is the state tree of Michigan and Maine is usually referred to as a “yard tree”. Arkansas’ state tree, The Loblolly Pine, is the most adaptable and common pine in the Southern United States. The Ponderosa Pine is the state tree of Montana and popularly distributed in the Western United States.

  • American Holly: The state tree of Delaware is popular in the deep woods. The slow-growing tree usually reaches between 40’ to 50’ tall. The tree does not do well in the winter sun or in drying winds.

Now that you know which trees are best to plant, you can join in on the fun this Arbor Day. Get the family involved and plant a tree together!
